NOTHIN’ SUCCEEDS LIKE SUCCESS provides an 80-minute glimpse at the behind-the-scenes inner workings of the 1960s pop process.

Professional songwriters would toil away during the day in cramped high-rise office cubicles, churning out compositions that they hoped would become big hits. In turn, it was their publishing company’s duty to try to attract attention to their songs. The easiest way for them to do so was in the form of a demonstration recording pressed on an acetate.

Sometimes, the writer(s) themselves would book studio time on the cheap and make a quick recording to demonstrate the potential of what a fully-realized production would sound like. If the writer didn’t have the correct voice for the track (or the right anatomy), there were plenty of available session vocalists willing to provide their services for cash.

Of course, the name of the vocalist would not appear on the acetate, so all these years later, the identity of many performers remains a mystery. When in doubt, Teensville chose to err on the side of caution –therefore, quite a few of the selections heard here do not have artists listed.
